Rachael - a team co-ordinator in a Financial Services organisation
The Situation
Following a promotion to my first supervisory role, I began working with OPAL Consulting to gain a Management Level 3 NVQ qualification.
Relatively inexperienced in management techniques and unsure of how to communicate effectively in various situations, my aim was for others to consider me a successful manager - and more importantly for me to function as one.
I had common obstacles to overcome, including the transformation from working amongst a team of individuals to manage them.
How OPAL helped
OPAL Consulting's approach to the NVQ included group workshops, which they facilitated. These sessions provided me with the knowledge, which then enabled me to evaluate whether processes within my department were effective or not, why, and if required, what should be implemented to progress.
Following the workshops, one to one coaching sessions then helped with the implementation of the these new processes, whilst allowing me to discuss specific situations if I was unsure of how to resolve them. Various communication techniques were considered for me to take forward, in a way I felt the most appropriate for my team and myself.
The process was very much focussed on achieving the qualifications within the workplace and tailored to meet the requirements of my job role and the department's objectives.
The Outcome
Equipped with the relevant knowledge and techniques to co-ordinate a team of individuals whilst achieving the company's objectives, I have confidently managed change that has ensured the ongoing success of the team.
During the NVQ programme, I was assigned additional operational responsibilities, and as a result of that gained more from the NVQ. I was also able to successfully delegate and reorganise the reporting structure - this has resulted in the progression of other individuals within the team.
I am currently working with OPAL Consulting to gain my Management Level 4 NVQ, and as I have previously experienced, their approach is flexible, accommodating, and above all motivating.
